It’s important to recognise children’s anxiety early.
While it’s natural for kids to feel afraid and seek assurance, or to experience head & stomach aches these signs could be symptoms of a larger problem. Here at VIC PARK PSYCHOLOGY we identify and treat children’s anxiety.
Children who suffer from an anxiety disorder are at a greater risk of developing various phobias and will face issues with their ability to both learn and socialise with other kids.
This anxiety will likely cause physical symptoms like sleepless & headaches. But its long-term effects can be far more detrimental. In 2008 a study undertaken by Harvard Medical School found that an untreated anxiety disorder could cause chronic cardiovascular and respiratory issues. More alarming is that this disorder is on the rise.
A joint 2017 report by Mission Australia and the Black Dog Institute showed that one in four children met the criteria for a serious mental illness, a 20% increase since 2012.
There are several types of children’s anxiety such as:
- Generalized anxiety disorder
- Separation anxiety disorder
- Selective mutism
- Specific phobias
- Panic disorder
- Social anxiety disorder
